Hey everyone!

So I’m finally starting a Lions Club within Holy Cross, or trying to get it passed. I’m trying to get members and come up with some activities for the club to do.

So basically what are lions?

Well if you haven’t heard of lions before, to put it simply, they’re awesome. We’re the largest service based organization in the world and we do work around our community and the world. The main thing that lions club do is raising money for eye sight. If you have done some history and research on Helen Keller, you would know that she shouted out to lions to become her “knights of the blind” for her “crusade against  darkness”. Here is a link to check out what Lions are, they do so much to simply put it all into this blog. I’ll tell you how it all goes with starting my club here.

How I got started in Lions was pretty simple, they had a youth program called Leos in my high school and I joined. I really loved the service we did and I became president for two years, had some fun, made some money, and then earlier this year, I got an email saying I won their International Leo of the Year. This is the most prestigious award that you can win as youth (under 18) and I was 1/23 people who got it around the world, its crazy. So I hope to continue my work, but now as a Lion instead of a Leo and one day become International President of this wonderful Organization.

You can find me in the Leo of the Year award along with a list of the other international award recipients in this PDF file. I’m the 12th one down, at Massachusetts, if you can read that better :).

So last week I’ve was terribly ill and to top it off I had two exams that week. Note to self: Don’t go to health services before class. I went to see the health services and it turned out that on Monday I had a 101.8 degree fever and the nurse made me miss class. I missed my math class which would have been really beneficial to go to before the exam on Wednesday. I also had a biology exam on Friday.

All in all, I survived and got better throughout the week, took my tests and now I’m just waiting on my scores.

Good day to you all!

Dan

So if you’re not from the New England area, you wouldn’t really understand, but if you are, you know how crazy the weather is around here. I’ve lived in New England my whole life and the weather is always random and you can’t really know what to expect. It’s not even November yet, and yesterday we got somewhere around 12-16inches (winter didn’t even start yet).. Also even during orientation there was Hurricane Irene that stopped 1 days of orientation and even though it was basically just rain and a lot of wind, the weather here is always crazy. Maybe this is due to global warming? Most likely, but it’s still very pretty outside.. Do you guys have crazy weather where you live?

I got somewhat sick recently, and have a terrible sore throat but here is a picture of what it looks like outside by dorm.

So I’ve been at Holy Cross for a few months now, and I just wanted to share a few insights so far with my intro biology class.

This Intro Biology class I would say is the hardest class I have right now, there is a ton of work and various readings we have to do to stay caught up with the workload. However, my professor is very interesting and I enjoy learning about all these various cells, organelles, and systems that are involved in biology that I’ve been learning. My lab is also challenging and I enjoy some aspects a lot more over others (who ever liked taking practicals or tests in general?).

Bio is very intense overall but this all holds true to Holy Cross’s great reputation for the sciences (and other subjects). All the professors really know what they are doing, and when we get on to topics that they are researching then they turn really enthusiastic and will sometimes even go off topic to discuss a little bit about their research and go in more depth about our subjects. In all honesty though, without my AP Biology class in high school, I would probably be lost now, or doing double the amount of work I already do to be keeping up with the class, and AP bio has helped me out tremendously. What we cover in this Intro Bio class is very fast paced and a lot of material that if I didn’t have that background in AP Bio I would probably be overwhelmed by the amount of work. I’m a bit more excited for the classes that come after this because I’m really interested in the Cell Biology, Genetics, and Virology classes. I hope once we take specific classes there won’t be these kinds of broad range of topics.  Anyways, enough of this rant I just have to get moving and work harder.

To put you into prospective the type of student I was in high school: I loved AP Biology (awesome teacher) and I wouldn’t necessarily study for my tests and manage an A in the class and didn’t study for the test and I got a 5.

Intro Biology here: I’m doing a lot more reading, and work than in my AP Biology class, and I currently do not have an A.

Don’t get discouraged though, when you really want something you’ll go to far lengths to get it, and I’m not about to give up, I’m definitely going to try and bring my grades up the rest of this semester!

By the way, my other classes I’m taking are Calculus 1, my Montserrat (which I will talk about in more detail later), and Chemistry – Atoms and Molecules mainly. Calculus and Chemistry are so far very easy for me because I have a pretty strong background in them from high school and my high school teachers prepared me well for these classes. – I was told this is one of the hardest freshman year schedules you can have, in a way I feel that it’s true, but definitely manageable.

Hi. My name is Dan Luu, a freshmen majoring Biology and under pre-med sequencing, I want to thank you all who’ll read my blogs and see my life at Holy Cross progress. I aspire to one day become a psychiatrist (since the 5th grade) and I’m going to be using Holy Cross to make it happen. I live a crazy life that revolves around dangerous adventures (you’ll see shortly), a lot of computer time, and activities in and out of Holy Cross and the Worcester area for fun, giggles, and service. Hello and Welcome world!
